What else could a tennis fan ask for? - Three amazing sets of tennis from the two greatest players of my generation. The sold out crowd of 19,000 plus created a buzz that could not be described by words. Once, the match started everyone was fixated on the action. After Pete was broken in the first game, someone yelled, “How you feeling Pete?!” The very next game, Pete ripped a forehand winner, and someone responded, “He feels great!” Things like that just added to the already electrified crowd.
The shot making was second to none, and I guess that’s what happens when you put two greats on the same court. At 5-2 Sampras in the 3rd set, Roger served four consecutive aces to pull within two games. However, it wasn’t all serious. There were moments of comic relief - when Pete misjudged Roger’s serve, both players shot each other smiles and winks, and when Pete won a big point, he pumped his fist in Tigeresque fashion towards Tiger Wood himself with a playful smile.
As soon as the last ball was hit, the crown erupted with cheers. My friend Pete got a great video of the crowd’s reaction. As Pete and I were reflecting on the experience afterwards, I was getting goose bumps, as corny as that sounds, but I couldn’t help it because of what I had just witnessed. There’s an excerpt from the AP that reads;
No one can say they saw Ali face Tyson in a boxing ring. Or Hogan face Woods on a golf course.
When you think about it, this was one of the greatest sports spectacles ever because the two greatest players in the sport went toe-to-toe. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I’m glad I didn’t pass it up. I’m sure they’ll schedule a few more matches, but none will ever be as big at this one - in world’s most famous arena.
